To register an activity such as a webinar in the Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS), please assign someone from the community to be the Provider Representative. Inform your Virtual Community Administrator of the assignment and then the Provider Representative will receive a password to enter information into the CCRS database along with instructions. Lastly, communicate the activity information to the participants. |

Project Management TIPs: Earning and Claiming PDUs
After earning your Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, you will want to take the necessary steps to maintain that certification. There are Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) you need to meet to keep your PMP current. The renewal cycle covers three years and begins the day you pass the exam. During each PMP CCR cycle you must attain no less than 60 professional development units (PDUs) toward credential maintenance.
Overview of Process to Maintain an Active PMP Certification Status:
- Attain no less than 60 PDUs during each certification/CCR cycle
- Report PDUs with the PMI online CCR System
- Complete the online Application for Renewal process which includes:
- Reaffirm PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct
- Reaffirm PMI Certification Application/Renewal Agreement
- Submit the credential renewal fee – US$60 for PMI members; US$150 for nonmembers
- Receive new certificate with updated certification/CCR cycle dates
Earning Professional Development Units
As a part of all its credentials and certifications, the Project Management Institute (PMI) has established the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. The CCR Program organizes PDUs into five categories.
- Category 1: Formal Academic Education
- Category 2: Professional Activities and Self-directed Learning
- Category 3: Instruction & Courses offered by PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s) and PMI Components
- Category 4: Courses offered by Other Education Providers
- Category 5: Volunteer Service to Professional or Community Organizations
The PMI Tallahassee Chapter (PMI TLH), our local “PMI Community”, provides a number of opportunities to earn PDUs. PMI TLH is a PMI Registered Education Provider and by attending the PMI TLH dinner meetings the Chapter holds every other month, you can earn 1.5 PDUs per meeting. That means for a pleasant evening of networking with project management professionals from industry and state positions and an informative presentation, you can earn as many as nine PDUs per year, or 27 PDUs per CCR cycle. Becoming an active committee member you could earn another 5 PDUs per year; and holding an elected position in the Chapter will bring another 10 PDUs per year, up to the Category 5 maximum of 20 per CCR cycle.

The bottom line is that it’s fairly easy to earn the required 60 PDUs over a three year cycle; and it’s certainly much easier and less costly to maintain a PMP than to reapply and be retested.
12 Ways to Earn PDUs
Every year, there are hundreds of opportunities to earn professional development units (PDUs) towards maintaining your PMI credential. While courses and seminars are ideal ways to stay up-to-date with project management best practices, many other activities occurring in your daily professional life may count toward PDUs, too. Here are 12 ways to earn PDUs this year:
1. PMI's Knowledge Shelf: Posts your articles about project management and information to help professionals and organizations advance the practice of project management. A team of volunteers along with PMI staff review the articles before posting them. Your paper could be a part of this virtual collection and earn you 15 PDUs under Category 2B if you are its single author.
2. PMI® Publication Quizzes: These are new and allow you to earn PDUs from the comfort and convenience of your personal computer. When you purchase a quiz bundle from PMI.org, you receive PMI-published articles and white papers with accompanying quizzes that test your learning. If you obtain a quiz score of 70 percent or higher you will earn between one and two PDUs per quiz in Category 3. PMP® credential holders can earn a maximum of 20 PDUs per certification cycle using Publication Quizzes.
3. Volunteer Service: Earn PDUs for providing your professional services to an organization outside of your employer. You could serve as an elected officer or volunteer committee member for a project management organization. Or you could provide a project/program management-related service to a community or charitable group.
