WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE PRESENTATION Dr. Haugan will present an overview of his recent book: Effective Work Breakdown Structures which includes a pragmatic approach to the use and application of the work breakdown structure (WBS) concept. The WBS is not a new concept in project management, but it is often misunderstood and not used as it should for maximum effectiveness in project management. The development and use of the WBS requires discipline and thought, like any planning. A properly designed WBS is essential in the structuring of any project as an important step towards getting the project started effectively. The WBS is also used throughout the life of the project as a key tool for planning, control and communication. Dr. Haugan brings many years of experience in the development of work breakdown structures and in the scoping and planning of new projects. He will present several rules for developing effective WBSs and will illustrate the rules in a “how to” format that can be readily adapted to your projects. He will discuss several different types of WBSs and several different types of WBS elements and will provide practical guidance in their application. He will bring sample WBSs from some of his current projects. Gregory T. Haugan, PhD, PMP Dr. Haugan is a Vice President with GLH Incorporated, specializing in project management consulting and training course development. He has over 30 years experience as a consultant and as a government and private sector official in the planning, scheduling, management and operation of projects of all sizes; and in the development and implementation of project management information systems. He has worked with over 50 private and public sector organizations on project management assignments. He has completed several consulting assignments this year with Israel Military Industries, Ltd. in Israel and is advising the GSA on the use of the WBS, Risk Management and EVMS on the new $560 million Department of Transportation building in Washington, DC. He is also performing volunteer project management work for two Northumberland County projects and involved in County emergency preparedness. He received his Ph.D. from the American University, his MBA from St. Louis University and his BSME from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has written three books published by Management Concepts, Inc. of Vienna, VA. “Effective Work Breakdown Structures” published in late 2002; “Project Planning and Scheduling” also published in late 2002; and “The Work Breakdown Structure in Government Contracting” published in 2003. The Planning and Scheduling book was the basis for a Project Planning and Scheduling Trainer which is self-paced and available as a CD-ROM or online from Management Concepts, Inc.
